WHY SERVICE YOUR FIRE ALARM

A Sounding Alarm Is Not a Working Alarm

Dust, draughts, building works, battery degradation and device ageing all silently reduce a fire alarm's ability to detect and warn. A system that sounded correctly last year may fail to detect a fire this year — and the only way to know is to test it professionally. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must maintain the fire detection system in efficient working order. A documented six-monthly service by a BAFE-accredited provider is the accepted standard of proof.

Legal Compliance

BS 5839-1 and the RR(FS)O 2005 require a competent person to maintain your system. A documented service history is your proof of compliance during an audit or enforcement visit.

Early Fault Detection

Degraded detectors, failing batteries and wiring faults are caught at a service visit — before they cause a false alarm or, worse, a failure to detect a real fire.

Insurance & Audit Ready

Insurers and fire officers ask for your servicing certificate and log book. We issue a signed BS 5839-1 certificate at every visit and keep your records up to date.

Fewer False Alarms

False alarms cause business disruption, lost staff time, and fire brigade charges. Regular servicing identifies the environmental and device causes before they trigger.

Automatic Scheduling

We schedule your next service automatically and send a reminder before each visit — so your compliance never lapses, even if your responsible person changes.

24hr Call-Out Support

Servicing customers get priority emergency call-out for faults and false alarms. An engineer attends typically within 24 hours, sooner for higher-risk faults.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

What a FireJet Fire Alarm Service Includes

Every six-monthly service visit follows the BS 5839-1:2017 routine. Our engineer tests half the detectors at each visit so that every device on the system is tested across the year, inspects the control panel and power supplies, and issues a signed servicing certificate.

Full System Inspection

Visual inspection of all detectors, call points, sounders, control equipment and power supplies to identify damage, tampering or environmental changes affecting performance.

Detector & Call Point Testing

Each visit tests 50% of detectors and a sample of manual call points per BS 5839-1:2017 — ensuring every device is tested across two six-monthly visits.

Sound Level & Coverage Check

Sound pressure level measurements confirm the alarm achieves the required decibel rating throughout the building, including areas with changed layouts.

Battery & Standby Power Test

Batteries and standby power supplies are inspected, load-tested and replaced where capacity has degraded — preventing silent failure during a mains outage.

Log Book & Compliance Certificate

Every service is recorded in your fire safety log book with a signed BS 5839-1 servicing certificate — the documentation insurers and enforcement officers ask to see.

Fault Rectification & Call-Out

Minor faults are rectified on-site during the service visit. For out-of-hours faults and false alarms, our engineers are available on emergency call-out nationwide.

Fire Alarm Servicing FAQs

Common questions about commercial fire alarm servicing, BS 5839-1 compliance, costs and frequency.

How often should a commercial fire alarm be serviced?+

Under BS 5839-1:2017, a commercial fire alarm system must be serviced by a competent person at least every six months — twice a year. Each service visit tests approximately 50% of the detectors, so that every device is tested across the two visits. In addition, a weekly user test (typically one call point) must be carried out by the responsible person on site. FireJet schedules both six-monthly service visits automatically and provides the weekly test log for your records.

What is included in a fire alarm service?+

A BS 5839-1 fire alarm service includes a visual inspection of all system components, functional testing of 50% of detectors and a sample of manual call points, sound level verification, battery and standby power inspection, control panel diagnostics, and a full written servicing certificate. Minor faults identified during the service are rectified on-site where possible. FireJet engineers also update your fire safety log book at every visit.

How much does fire alarm servicing cost?+

FireJet's commercial fire alarm servicing starts from £99 + VAT for a standard system service visit. The final price depends on the number of zones, detectors and devices on your system. We provide a fixed-price quote after a free site survey or system review — there are no hidden charges or call-out fees within the agreed schedule. Contact us for a written quote tailored to your premises.

Is fire alarm servicing a legal requirement?+

Yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to ensure that fire detection and warning systems are subject to a suitable system of maintenance. BS 5839-1:2017 sets out the recommended servicing regime. Failure to maintain a fire alarm system is one of the most common enforcement actions taken by fire and rescue authorities. A documented six-monthly service by a competent, BAFE-accredited provider is the accepted way to demonstrate compliance.

Can you service an existing fire alarm system you didn't install?+

Yes. FireJet services all major fire alarm panel types and manufacturers including Advanced, C-TEC, Hochiki, Apollo, Kentec and Morley. We routinely take over servicing of systems installed by other companies. Our engineer will inspect your panel, confirm compatibility, and provide a takeover servicing quote. We also offer system takeovers where the existing installer is unresponsive or has ceased trading.

What happens if my fire alarm develops a fault between services?+

FireJet provides emergency call-out support to all servicing customers. If your system develops a fault, a false alarm issue, or a panel fault between scheduled services, contact us and an engineer will attend — typically within 24 hours, and sooner for higher-risk faults. Minor faults identified during a routine service are rectified on-site at no additional charge within your servicing agreement.

Do you service fire alarms nationwide?+

Yes. FireJet provides commercial fire alarm servicing across the UK from our Chorley, Lancashire headquarters. We have dedicated local service pages for towns and cities across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, West and South Yorkshire, Hampshire, London and more. Wherever your premises are located, we can assign a local engineer and maintain a consistent six-monthly servicing schedule.

What is the difference between a weekly test and a six-monthly service?+

A weekly test is a simple user check carried out by the responsible person on site — typically activating one manual call point at a different point each week and confirming the alarm sounds. It is not a substitute for a professional service. A six-monthly service is a thorough, engineer-led inspection and test of the system to BS 5839-1, including detector testing, battery inspection and certification. Both are required for full compliance.
