Building Grades (BS 5839-1)
Grade A
Premises with a continuously manned reception or control room with constant occupancy.
Examples: Hotels, hospitals, control centres, 24/7 security operations
Grade B
Premises with occupancy during extended hours but not 24/7.
Examples: Offices, retail shops, schools, universities
Grade C
Premises with occupancy during normal business hours only.
Examples: Standard offices, small retail units, small workshops
Grade D
Premises with limited occupancy or remote locations.
Examples: Storage facilities, remote buildings, infrequently used spaces
Grade E
Unmanned premises with no regular occupancy.
Examples: Storage warehouses, remote plant rooms, unmanned facilities

LD1 (LD = Life Detection, Full Coverage)
Standard: BS 5839-1
When Required: The highest domestic life detection category — automatic detectors throughout all areas including circulation spaces, rooms and voids. Used in larger multi-occupancy residential and high-risk premises where total coverage is required.

LD1 is used for larger or higher-risk residential premises; LD2 is the standard for most domestic and HMO properties.

An LD1 fire alarm system is a domestic life detection system that provides automatic fire detection throughout the entire premises — including all rooms, circulation spaces and voids. It's the highest coverage domestic category under BS 5839-1 and is typically specified for larger multi-occupancy residential buildings, sheltered housing and high-risk domestic premises where total coverage is required.
What's the difference between LD2 and L1?
LD2 (Life Detection, Grade 2) is required for Grade A premises (24/7 occupancy, manned reception) and uses automatic fire detection with remote monitoring. L1 (Life Safety, Automatic) is required for Grade B & C premises and also uses automatic detection but is typically for buildings with extended occupancy. L1 is the most common standard for commercial premises like offices and shops.
Do I need LD2 or L1 for my premises?
This depends on your building's occupancy pattern. Grade A (24/7 manned) = LD2. Grades B & C (extended/standard business hours) = L1. A fire safety assessment will determine your exact requirements under BS 5839-1.
Is LD2 or L1 more expensive?
