Emergency Lighting Testing Requirements: What Every Business Needs to Know
Under BS 5266, emergency lighting must be tested monthly (briefly) and annually (full duration). We explain exactly what's required and how to stay compliant.
Why Emergency Lighting Matters
In the event of a power failure during an emergency, emergency lighting ensures that building occupants can safely find escape routes and exits. Without it, a fire evacuation in a dark building can quickly become fatal.
Monthly Testing
BS 5266 requires a brief functional test every month. This involves simulating a mains failure (usually via a dedicated test key or switch) and confirming that all emergency luminaires and exit signs illuminate. The test duration is typically 1–5 minutes. Results must be recorded in the building's fire safety logbook.
Annual Testing
Once a year, a full-duration test of 3 hours (for standard emergency lighting) must be carried out. During this test, all luminaires must remain illuminated for the full duration. Any failures must be remedied before the building is reoccupied. A competent engineer should carry out this test and issue a compliance certificate.
Who Can Carry Out Testing?
Monthly tests can be carried out by a competent member of staff. Annual full-duration tests should be carried out by a qualified engineer. FireJet provides emergency lighting testing and certification for commercial premises across Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire.
